A nice short whistle stop tour of some of the more remote southern highlights the island has to offer.
Note: The pick up from this tour starts in Victoria or at the Swartz bay ferry terminal – but everything is flexible – we can also organize transfers and ferry transport from Vancouver/Vancouver airport/Victoria airport/Nanaimo ferry terminal – just drop us an email and we will sort the rest.
Day 1: Collect your vehicle and conduct the full handover with your adventure consultant, you can then collect your keys and be on your way.
Pass through Victoria and stock up on any supplies – we have a list of good places if you need any advice.
Drive towards Port Renfrew and you will overnight at a campsite just outside of Port Renfrew.
Enjoy the drive along the winding coastal road, on a sunny day make sure you have the windows down and breath in the fresh sea air.
Day 2: Port Renfrew to Carmanah Park – East entrance (Overnight nitrate Lake)
Say goodbye to the tarmac – you won’t be seeing it for a while.
A nice early start – take the short drive from Port Renfrew to Carmanah Provincial park – East entrance. This takes 1.5 hr – 2 hrs. On the way look out for Big Lonely Doug – 100’s year old Sitka Spruce left standing on his own as you drive along the Gordan Bay road.
You are more than welcome to overnight in this section of Carmanah if you prefer, but there are no spots suitable for camping with the vehicle so you would need to walk tent to a camping spot. Either way we recommend spending a couple of hours here hiking around as it offers a different perspective to the other side of the park.
If you decided to not overnight here, we recommend the drive on to NitNat lake and enjoy a leisurely evening by the water.
DO NOT try and explore the Carmanah Main road into the north of the park towards the former hummingbird research camp, it’s not passable.
Arrive into Nitnat lake in the evening and set up camp. Enjoy an evening stroll down the lake.
Day 3: Pack up camp and take the short hours drive to the west entrance of Carmanah Walbran park
Upon arrival, set up camp and pack a small day bag with lunch and supplies. We recommend doing both the hike to the 3 sisters and past if you want although the trails are not maintained past the 3 sisters and also towards Stolhman grove (the grove itself is now closed to public)
Enjoy this ancient forests and marvel in the size of the trees.
Recommendation: If you fancied a de-tour we highly recommend the drive and short hike to the B24 Liberator Crash site – a 1944 RAF plane that came down.
Day 4: Today you drive from Carmanah to just south of Port Alberni. Its roughly a 2.5-3 hr drive along gravel roads.
Recommendation: If you fancied a de-tour/wild goose chase we recommend the drive and short hike to the B24 Liberator Crash site – a 1944 RAF plane that came down.
Camping tonight is on the shores of the Port Alberni Inlet with hot showers.
Day 5: Drive this morning to Tofino – Approx, 2 Hrs drive.
Spend the day at your leisure with a host of activities at your finger tips.
Tour to Hot springs cove
Overnight with a view of the ocean.
Day 6: Enjoy your day doing any activities you want to do, you have a short 3 hour drive to Nanaimo this afternoon.
Day 7: Time to head back to Victoria 🙁
